Locks for Love

Locks for Love is a non-profit organization.  The organization provides hair pieces for children who suffer from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis in the United States and Canada. The largest amount of hair is donated to children with alopecia and the second largest is to children with cancer. Lock’s for loves mission statement is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children.

They use the donated ponytails to make prostheses or hairpieces for children. The hair donated that is too short to make a wig is sold which helps the manufacturing costs. The wigs don’t contain glue or tape they use a vacuum seal that makes the hairpiece stay on the head. Children can play sports, for example swimming or soccer and they can even shower with their wig. They don’t have to worry about other children trying to pull it.  This helps the children have a feeling of normalcy to their lives.

The organization was started by Madonna Coffman. When she was in her 20’s she was diagnosed with alopecia. She recovered but when her four year old daughter was diagnosed with alopecia and lost all her hair, it became her mission to help her. She quit all her other charity work and took on Locks for Love in 1998. Her daughter’s recovery was an inspiration to provide hair pieces for children in need.

Locks for Love encourages people to donate their hair. It is recommended to go to their own salon where they feel comfortable. The minimum length of hair to donate is ten inches but any length of hair is accepted as well. The organization does not accept bleached or highlighted hair. Recently I donated my hair to lock for love. I went to my salon where I usually go to get my hair cut. They measured the length of my hair, then tied it into a ponytail and cut it. They mailed the ponytail to Locks For Love. If you are unable to donate your hair you can make a financial donation to the charity.

By the one small act of cutting your hair  and donating it to Locks For Love, you are helping young boys and girls suffering from alopecia or cancer by  improving their self -esteem and confidence in themselves.
