JV blocks punt, rolls past Rebels in second half

On a cold Friday, October 5th the junior varsity football team defeated the Ridgewood Rebels, 38-22. It was a great non-conference victory for the Chargers on Homecoming. The Chargers improved their record to 3-4, led by four Chris Morrow touchdowns and two more by Carlton Lawrence, and great defense led By Shaquille Washington, and Isaiah Allen that got its 13th turnover of the season.

A big blocked punt in the second quarter by Adonis White and Justyn Williams turned the game around for the Chargers. The score was 16-12 and the Rebels had a chance to pin the Chargers deep down in their own territory but the blocked punt instead gave the Chargers the ball at Ridgewood’s 30 yard line. St. Joes scored on that possession and took the lead 18-16 going into halftime. To start the second half Davontre Treadwell kicked a wobbly onside kick 15 yards to the left and gave the Chargers the ball. The onside kick was actually a miscue, “coach told me to kick it to number 24, and he was playing really far back so I tried to kick it in the middle luckily it didn’t go far and we got the ball back” Tray said. St. Joes then scored on the first play of the half to give them an eight point lead; Chris Morrow ran 40 yards for the score.

A muffed punt by St. Joes in the second quarter which Ridgewood scored off of gave the Rebels some life and the lead, but a second half rout over Ridgewood was the game changer for the Chargers. With three touchdowns in the second half the Chargers never looked back. The second half consisted of 2 turnovers; one fumble recovery by Isaiah Allen that set up a Chargers score. The Rebels just didn’t have any answer for running back Carlton Lawrence and Quarterback Chris Morrow with their combined six touchdowns. The offensive line was dominating Ridgewood while the Chargers racked up over 150 yards on the ground. The Rebels (5-1) came in to the game undefeated but not any longer. Mid way through the fourth quarter Chris Morrow ran in 10 yards to seal the victory for the Chargers. Receivers Chris Mullins and Byron Robertson setup scores for the Chargers early in the first half to keep the game in reach.

After the Game Quarterback Chris Morrow said “this was a great team victory with the defense stopping them (Ridgewood) the Offensive line blocking together and everyone doing their jobs”. St. Joes improved to 3-4 and will take on the Hales Franciscan Spartans next Friday night at Hales. The Chargers still have a chance to have a winning season if they win their next two games.
