New format to make for more exciting Bowl season

Kyle Murray, Staff writer

The College Football season is underway as is the new four team playoff. The first three weeks saw many of the preseason’s top teams (Georgia, Michigan State, Ohio State, and South Carolina) lose.

With the new playoff system, the top four teams at the end of the season will play in a single elimination tournament. On January 1, the four teams will play in the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl. The winners of the games will play on Monday January 12th in Arlington, Texas.

My 4 teams to make the playoffs are Florida St., Michigan St., Georgia, and Oregon. Even though Michigan St. and Georgia both have one loss, I believe they will win out and win their respective conferences.

Florida St. was the preseason favorite and after week three still the number one team in the nation led by Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston. The Seminoles have a fairly easy schedule with their biggest tests at home against Clemson and Notre Dame. The Noles will win the ACC and be the number one seed in the playoffs.

Oregon, the preseason No. 3, is my No. 2 seed. The Ducks are captained by a Heisman Trophy candidate, Marcus Mariota, who has already thrown for over 800 yards and 8 touchdowns. Oregon made a huge statement in their big win over Michigan St in week 2 beating the Spartans 46-27. The Ducks will probably play USC in the Pac 12 Championship which would also be their toughest opponent.

My Dark Horse to make the playoff is the Georgia Bulldogs out of the SEC. The Bulldogs lost their second game of the season to South Carolina after routing Clemson in week 1. The SEC is the toughest conference in the country and one loss to a conference opponent doesn’t eliminate them from playoff contention. The Bulldogs will have a fairly easy conference schedule compared to years past but a meeting with Alabama in the SEC Championship game will decide its fate.

Michigan St. will make the playoff out of the Big Ten; the Spartans let up 20 plus consecutive points to Oregon in week 2 but played a great first half and led the Ducks for a lot of the game. Michigan St is led by its stellar defense that is top in the Big Ten. With Braxton Miller of Ohio St out for the season, the Spartans are the Big Ten favorite. The Spartans offense is led by one of the best pocket passing quarterbacks in Connor Cook.

When the season is all set and done, I think Oregon will win the National Championship in Texas. The Ducks have a better defense than in years past and veteran Marcus Mariota’s playmaking ability makes them better than any team out there.
