Saying goodbye to another decade…

Jessica Watts, Staff writer

As 2019 comes to an end, not only are we saying goodbye to an eventful and exciting year, but also to the end of a decade. There have been lots of memorable moments, but here are the few that make the best of the best.

As we all know, movies have a way of opening our eyes to so many different things, but these are the ones that made the biggest impact on our lives.  In 2013, Disney released Frozen which, as we all know, became a huge phenomenon in almost no time at all. Everything from backpacks, to Ziploc bags, to alarm clocks had characters from the movie on them.

The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) released 21 movies since 2010 featuring superheroes such as Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain America, and Thor. The most recent Avengers movie, Avengers- Endgame, became and still remains the highest grossing movie of all time with 2.7902 billion dollars.

In 2017, a movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel It was released with the same title. Featuring the clown Pennywise, and the Losers’ Club, this movie terrified everyone from 10-years old to 70-years old. It became one of the most famous movie adaptations ever and Pennywise appeared in everyone’s nightmares.

In music, artists such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, and One Direction broke records and had songs that everyone sang in the shower. Whether it was Problem by Ariana Grande or What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction, Pop music became the most popular genre in the world.

As for television, Nickelodeon brought us shows like Big Time Rush, Victorious, and iCarly. Disney brought us shows like Jessie, Good Luck Charlie, and Liv and Maddie. These shows made people laugh, cry, and enjoy being a kid. Whether it was Tori Vega’s high notes at the end of a song or Teddy Duncan’s video diaries, these shows were ones that we will never forget.

Social media also began to become popular with the launches of Instagram and Snapchat. People of all ages finally had a brand-new way to connect with people from their past or from all over the world. Now, these apps have become two of the most recognizable logos of all time.

In local sports, the Cubs broke a 108-year drought by winning the World Series in 2016, while the Blackhawks won three Stanley Cups (2010, 2013 and 2015) in the decade, their best run in the history of the franchise. Unfortunately, the Bulls, White Sox and Bears had pretty mediocre decades, with the Bears reaching the NFC Championship game in 2010, but not having much more success outside of that.

So, as we make our way through the last month of this glorious decade, filled to the brim with memories that have shaped our entire lives, let us remember all of these and more. Also, we must bring these into our futures. After all, we are closer to the year 2040 than 1990.
